November 7, 2012 - Posted to Holiday Shopping, Special Events.

Veterans Day Freebies

As in previous years, numerous restaurants, retailers and other businesses are showing their support for our troops and veterans with great deals and freebies on Veterans Day (Sunday, Nov. 11). This year, we came up with 48 solid offers for active-duty military, veterans and in some cases, their families. Before we start the list, however, there are a couple things you should consider:

1) Proof of Military Service
Most restaurants and companies require some form of military identification. As proof of military service, you can usually present a Uniform Service ID card,  Uniform Services Retired ID card, current “Leave and Earnings” statement, a DD214, photograph in uniform, wear your uniform, or such veterans’ organization cards as American Legion or VFW.

2) Participating Outlets
Because many of these companies are franchises, not all participate. Call ahead to verify they’re offering the deal we’ve listed and the times they are offering it.

That said, here are the deals:

Just desire to say your article is surprising. The clarity in your post is simply excellent and I could assume you're an expert on this subject.

I have 5 spaces open for Independent veterans, Denton Texas, nice quite area . 469-658-2389

Posted February 18, 2013 by Ms. Johnson

Subway in Mt Juliet, Tennessee refused, and one customer was offended by veteran asking for free sandwich. I will never buy from Subway again!!

Posted December 15, 2012 by JAMES

Back in 2011 i got a free 6 inch sub on vet day.. It was the subway right by the north gate just outside Fort Drum, NY.

Posted November 15, 2012 by Infantry 11b

Please boycott Subway they do not honor Veterans Day. I live in Arlington, Texas.

Posted November 12, 2012 by Denise

Shame on Subway! How dare they! I agree with Kirk, "BOYCOTT SUBWAY!" ooh raa Vets!

Posted November 12, 2012 by VET

If you do not have a current military ID, most locations will accept your discharge paperwork: DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. Before January 1, 1950, several similar forms were used by the military services, including the WD AGO 53, WD AGO 55, WD AGO 53-55, NAVPERS 553, NAVMC 78PD and the NAVCG 553. If you cannot locate your discharge forms, there is a link to request them from the National Archives page: http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/dd-214.html

Posted November 12, 2012 by Adam

Home Depot did not honor their 10% discount to Veterans, although their ad specifies that they have a 10% everyday for active duty and retired military BUT for other military holidays such as Veteran's Day they extend the 10% to all veterans. We were told no because if something was on sale it would be a double discount. Well, so is it every normal day if something is on sale. False advertising pure and simple.

Went to Texas Roadhouse for free Veteran's meal. The meal was perfect and the employees very warm and welcoming. The manager came around and thanked the veterans for their time in service and thanked them for coming to visit. All around great deal!

Posted November 12, 2012 by Cheryle Roussin

Subway refused to honor the free sandwich deal. Tried two stores. Having a purple heart and being in a wheelchair doesn't count with this low-life franchise.

Posted November 12, 2012 by Jerry

Subway should be ashamed. It's because of veterans that they even have a business. Now BOYCOTT SUBWAY!

Posted November 12, 2012 by john kirk

Thank you again Knots Berry Farm.

Posted November 12, 2012 by dennis berger

My local Subway said they had NEVER heard of this as a Subway offer. Only at a few, independent shops.

Posted November 12, 2012 by Lee Donlon

Applebee's was outstanding, food was great. People & staff were friendly. Going to Golden Coral today. Subway was a loser.

Posted November 12, 2012 by george

Turned away from T.G.I. Fridays because I couldn't sit down and eat. Some veterans do work on holidays and I only get a 20 minute lunch break. No worries I'll spend my money elsewhere...

Posted November 12, 2012 by Jason

My partner and I went to the California Pizza Kitchen on Federal Hwy In Fort Lauderdale, FL for Vets Appreciation Day on Sunday evening 11/11/12. I don't think I have ever had friendlier service, and we were treated like VIPS, plus served an oustanding meal! The manager came over and chatted with us about our military past (both USN) and gave us a voucher to come back for a free meal. This particular restaurant staff and the entire chain gets an A from us. We will be regular customers there in the future.

Posted November 12, 2012 by David H Baldwin

thx so much. This really is a treat for those who can't afford to eat out.

Posted November 12, 2012 by judy

I've never gone to one of these freeby meals until today. I was having the tires rotated on my truck and there was a Friendly's across the street. I thought I'd go over and grab a bit, and was welcomed with a free breakfast. I had my Marine Corps Hat on, and the hostess told me my breakfast was one them today, and thanked me for my service. I was very pleased with not only the service of the Lancaster Friendly's emolyees, but the breakfast was outstanding as well. Thank you, Mike U.S.M.C.

A lot of people are saying that they had trouble with the promotion not being offered at their local Subway. I just wanted to say that I work at a Subway in north Georgia, and we did honor the promotion, along with our 3 other sister stores. It was wonderful to be able to meet all the men and women who have served our country, yesterday. And, I am so sorry to everyone who was turned down.

Posted November 12, 2012 by CharG

Why do some businesses not recognize all veterans. They only recognize active duty or retired. A vet is a vet if they served their full obligation. Some of our combat vets did not retire. ALL should be recognized. Notably Home Depot and Lowes. They give discount all of the time, but only for retires, and active.

Posted November 12, 2012 by jonathan

Thanks Dennys. You had your all you can eat pancakes; and your people are very nice. See you again soon.

Posted November 12, 2012 by Steve Bilyue

Thank you for researching and presenting this information for us. With gratitude from a '70's WAC.

Posted November 12, 2012 by Derest

Thank you. Semper Fi.

Posted November 12, 2012 by Ricky Mitchell

To all that honored veterans, thanks. My subway, again, would not participate! Will not eat there either.

Posted November 12, 2012 by stan

Thousands of American veterans were embarrassed yesterday when they walked into Subway and were denied the veterans meal. Instead of suffering further embarrassment many Vet's purchased sandwiches and other menu items. So who do you think paid for the $111,000 donation to a wounded warrior project? Sad!

Posted November 12, 2012 by simon

Thanks too all who support our Freedom Fighters!!

Posted November 12, 2012 by Robert Monigan-Retired

I went to TGI Fridays, yesterday with the family. I mentioned I was a Veteran and received free meal worth about $10.99. Thank you, TGI Fridays, it was awesome. Thank you for supporting our Veterans.

Started my day with a free hair cut and massage at Sports Clips. Then lunch at Olive Garden. Great day.

Posted November 11, 2012 by cobb

I contacted two local Subways restaurants and was informed that they're not honoring the offer. Subway is getting lots of free advertisement about how great they are to vets on 11/11, but it appears many of its franchises aren't honoring the offer. I wonder how many Subway restaurants are actually honoring the free sub offer to vets on 11/11. Vets - Please share your experience at Subway on 11/11.

Posted November 11, 2012 by Bill

Thanks soooooo much !!!!

Posted November 11, 2012 by roy

What about those veterans that did not retire or diabled and no ID cards?

Posted November 11, 2012 by sa t. spooner

Thanks for all the treats donated. It is truly appreciated.

Posted November 11, 2012 by crystal corl

All of the Subways I called in Moreno Valley Calif wont honor the free sandwich for Veterans Day....and this is a Air Force base community. Pretty sad!

Posted November 11, 2012 by Ernie C

Here in Waldorf, MD we have three independent owned by Subways (owned by foriegn nationals) and they do not honor Veterans on Veterans Day with the free six inch sub offer...Can not believe I have been purchasing subs from this location and they do not honor veterans...will never return again. As a matter of fact, the two Subways on Smallwood and Festival Way are owned by the same people and they have told their employees not to allow the free six inch sub. They have the right and I have the right not to purchase from their business ever again.

Posted November 11, 2012 by Larry D.

Its good to see that someone honors my service to my country.

Posted November 11, 2012 by Michael Sipes

I went to McCormick and Schmicks for lunch. They notified me the promotion is only available for retired veterans. Those currently serving are not eligible.

Posted November 11, 2012 by AF Vet

Another way to say thanks for your service- I commend all of you that make us feel good on Veterans Day - Navy - Bay of pigs - Thanks JFK for keeping us out of war.....

Golden Corral in Kenosha, WI has always been 1st rate with their special for Veterans Day. Even when I can't make it, I highly recommend them. When my wife wants to go to a buffet, I try to steer her there.

Golden Corral truly has good intentions to honor vets by choosing Monday to serve those who served. To me, this says they really want to service every vet without competition, as well as ensuring every vet is good and hungry when they get there. Thanks, Golden Corral.

We are both Vietnam veterans. We met in the Navy, and have been married 41 years. We are so proud to have had this opportunity to serve our nation -- the greatest nation on Earth. We each had dear friends who gave "their all," so we ALL could remain free. Not a day passes that we do not remember. We now live in a very dangerous time for our nation. We must support our troops, their families, and all we can do to keep America free. Our parents and those who fought in World War II sacrificed much for our freedom. I believe it is time for us to do the same. Sept. 11 was our Pearl Harbor. Our children must know these truths and facts. Thanks for the Veteran's Day kindness. Most of all, thank you to all our veterans. Keep America free!

Posted November 12, 2011 by fred and gay klein

Olive Garden offered a free entree from a select menu. I just got back from there, and they gave me AND my girlfriend a free meal (I don't think they were supposed to do that). Plus, they gave us a $10 gift card to come back! After a beer and dessert, the bill was like $8. Pretty awesome.

Posted November 11, 2011 by Justin

I went to Applebee's and was treated with respect and they were great!! I will be going back as a regular customer. It was my first time there and I loved it. I went to Denny's and they turned me away and the manager was so rude. I'll never go there again. Denny's lied trying to create business with false pretenses.

Posted November 11, 2011 by nick

Thanks to all the restaurants that gave to us vets. My husband and I went to Applebee's and Subway and everyone was so nice. We thank you and God bless you and all the vets.

Posted November 11, 2011 by jula britt

My Subway won't do this for us vets, so I guess I won't be eating there anymore.

Posted November 11, 2011 by Ray

Thanks to all for your generosity.

Posted November 11, 2011 by Bill

Thanks so much for posting this information and thanks to all the participating businesses who are recognizing our service. There was a time when all males served unless exempted. Now the military depends on volunteer men and women and has successfully managed without a draft, despite fighting two wars for the past decade!

Thanks for the info here.

Thank you so very much.

Better call where ever you go first. I went to Dennys and Subway in Denton, Texas, and neither one honored the above ads. They are available only at participating locations, as the blog writer said.

Posted November 11, 2011 by JAKE

Thank you for the information in reference to honoring our veterans. My husband is a retiree. Thank you to all participating businesses.

Posted November 11, 2011 by Erma Long

Wentzville, Mo., Lowe's refused to give me (a disabled veteran with ID) the discount! Even the supervisor said, "No we don't give discounts." Home Depot gives discount without any problem with ID.

I work at SportClips and we do not offer any free or discounted haircuts on Veteran's Day.

What happened to McDonald's?

Posted November 10, 2011 by Liz

I like your information. As a Vietnam era vet, we were not treated kindly in the 1960s. I'm happy to see so many companies with freebies or discounts to active duty military, as well as including some of these to those of us who served many years ago.

Posted November 10, 2011 by Bill Mills

Remembering and honoring our Vet's is so important, and is often overlooked these days. Big Gunz Clothing is having a 10% sale on all their merchandise November 10 to 14. 10% of the sales will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. You can visit BigGunzClothing.com to help donate, or visit WoundedWarriorProject.org for more information about the foundation.

Thank you for your support. My son is a war veteran and he is still -- to this day -- proud to have served for 8 years.

Thanks for the update. I am a disabled veteran and am honored.

I live in Milwaukee and have enjoyed Applebee's meals the past three years. It is about time other establishments take care of us vets. We are the ones who give our lives for this GREAT COUNTRY of ours so we have FREEDOM and PEACE. GOD BLESS ALL OUR VETS AND MILITARY STILL SERVING FOR KEEPING AMERICA SAFE AND FREE. Have a safe return home. I'm very proud of you all.

Olive Garden: As their way of saying thanks, active service and veterans are invited to enjoy a FREE entree on 11-11-11.

Posted November 8, 2011 by Dwayne

FYI: Vets in Florida can get a blue "V" added to the bottom of their drivers license for $1 at the DMV.

As a USAF veteran I would like to extend a 10% discount for any military brother and sisters and their families. I am requesting direction on how to increase the awareness of this discount. I have an attachment flyer and our website is www.sportsmanbarbers.com The discount will be this Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday the 14th. I thank all veterans as well as all those who have supported us troops through the years. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Blessings.

Do you have Veterans Day freebies for 2011?

Posted November 4, 2011 by John P Eckenrode USAF

I went to the Applebee's here in ST. Louis, MO. North County and the food was very good. They had a special dinner deal where we could pick from 3 different entrees. I am a 10 point veteran and it makes me feel good to know someone still cares. I am also a female who got hurt at Fort Bragg, NC. on post in 1971. Thank you Applebee's for all you do for the veterans.

Please add your voice to improve access to the Lowe's discount. Lowe's policy requires either valid military ID or Veterans Administration ID. As most Veterans know, you are supposed to turn in your military ID when you leave service and not every Veteran, even combat Veterans, access the VA. As a result, they don't have a VA ID. Lowe's: Please reconsider and add the Veteran Discharge (DD 214, Separation Report,...) with a picture ID as way for us to obtain access.

Thanks to Lowe's and Home Depot for the discounts

The VA also denied me about 20 years ago and now I have decided to give fight again for my compensation. Thanks again! Army Vet Hoooo-ah!!!

My husband and I ate at Applebee's in Milltown last year and this year on Veteran's day-we were treated very nice and the food on the veteran's menu was quite generous portions.Had a really nice dinner. Question-Was Target offering 10% discount on Veteran's day-we thought we saw it advertised on news 12-if so,did it say in the stores? We went to the Mill town Target and they said they do not give military discount-we were confused .

Posted November 11, 2010 by Sheryl Umphrey

Too bad that those same stores and restaurants do not participate on any freebies or discounts in Puerto Rico.

The Uno Pizza deal is a joke. It's a buy one, get one free coupon. Gee, thanks for the coupon. Nice of you to give coupons to veterans instead of a complimentary meal.

Thanks for the free food and other stuff. I served in the Navy from 87-95. I was injured badly when equip. on my ship failed, shattered pelvis, both knees blown, left shoulder fractured and dislocated, lost nearly a dozen front teeth, etc. etc. received last rites twice, went code blue 4 times my first week in hosp. hooked on painkillers, took me a year to learn how to walk again after both hip were replaced. It took 7 full years to recieve disability compensation from the veterans admin.and 12 for social security. both denied my claims and made me jump through hoops and over obstacles meant to make you give up, and most folks do. they count on it. I volunteered and never regretted it. I worked 24-48 hours straight routinely for peanuts 1,000 miles from land. I went around the world three times and visited over 40 countries. I learned quickly that the United States is the best place in the world to live. We have so much and the rest of the world struggles, half-starved, living in filth. I feel proud when people thank me for serving in the military, I was glad to do it. It was the most difficult and challenging assingment I ever had and I somehow rose to the occasion and did very well. When times got tough on board the order of the day was "suck it up, shut the f up,and do your job". I just felt like saying this this AM to anyone who reads the comments. I hope the people of the USA realize that we have it sooo good here and we should try to make our country better and stronger for the future, get involved in your communities and contribute to the greater good. Vote and try to do your part to make sure our country does not get weaker. I see some of the things that are occurring in the US today and I am afraid we are going dangerously fast in the wrong direction. Happy veterans day everyone, I hope that everyone is proud of our great country and if not i hope you take action to make it a country you can be proud of. GO NAVY!

Laura: I called Krispy Kreme corporate before writing this article and was told they were not participating in a Veterans Day promotion this year. Some shops may go rogue, however.

Traci: Sports Clip's PR office said not all shops were participating in this offer. Sorry if Dallas wasn't part of the promotion.
